Kansas Dementia Roadmap

Caring for a person living with memory loss or dementia is a journey, one that can last for many years,

and is filled with twists and turns. The journey is not a straight path through stages — each person with
Alzheimer’s or other type of dementia may progress differently and in their own time. Family members who are companions on this journey will need information, support and guidance along the way.

To help, we've created an easy-to-digest resource publication along with other resource materials for families. The Kansas Dementia Road Map: A Guide for People Impacted by Dementia offers practical information to families as they enter into, live with and navigate the dementia journey. It is just as useful to clinicians as they strive to support their patients.

The Roadmap also offers guidance about what to do when a person experiences changes in memory and thinking. It also offers information and tips about what to expect and steps to take if someone in your family has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or other dementia.

General Resources

Dementia refers to loss of memory, language, and other thinking skills that is severe enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia. As of 2020, there were an estimated 55,000 people living with Alzheimer’s disease in Kansas. That number is expected to grow as the population ages. We are committed to supporting those with dementia and their loved ones.

The Alzheimer's Association 24/7 Helpline is funded in part by grants from the Administration on Aging and the Administration for Community Living. It is available 24-hours a day, seven days a week at 1-800-272-3900. It provides information, expert advice, care consultations, and referrals at both national and local levels.
