The Kansas Behavioral Health Integration Into Schools Program

The Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services is partnering to promote prevention, treatment, and recovery to ensure Kansans with behavioral health needs live safe, healthy, successful and self-determined lives in their communities. The Kansas Behavioral Health Integration into Schools Program (BHIS) is funded through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Disaster Relief Grant Program. The BHIS program will focus on improving the mental health of children and adolescents affected by tornadoes and flooding in 2019.

The project aims to increase access to school-based behavioral health services through this catchment area, elevating existing programming through implementation of the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support framework (MTSS). To accomplish this, the project team will import elements from a successful Pennsylvania school-based screening program which combines staff training in evidence-based practices and interventions (for service providers and school personnel), access to standardized screening and referral technology, and ongoing technical assistance and implementation support.

The grant team provides technical assistance, training, technology, webinars, resource mapping and communications.

Project Goals

BHLC of Kansas seeks to improve mental health awareness and suicide prevention for students, parents, professionals, and community members through the following:

• Assisting schools by implementing BH-Works assessments and universal screening to increase knowledge of suicide prevention and improve overall mental health awareness
• Providing training to mental health providers, students, parents, and community members on mental health literacy and suicide risk management
• Providing training on Attachment Based Family Therapy (ABFT), an empirically supported family approach to helping youth at risk for suicide, for professionals and clinicians
• Providing training on Teen Mental Health First Aid and Question Persuade Refer to the community, students, and parents in order to increase suicide risk awareness
