Provides care to individuals whose withdrawal signs and symptoms are sufficiently severe to require primary medical and nursing care services. 24-hour observation, monitoring, and counseling services are available in this treatment modality.

Licenses individuals to perform alcohol and drug abuse counseling. The agency responsible for certification and licensing is the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board. The government of the state of Kansas licenses treatment providers and substance abuse counselors.

Assists individuals to become self-sufficient through various services that assess, plan, implement, coordinate, monitor, and evaluate the options and services to meet an individual’s needs, using communication and available resources to promote quality, cost-effective outcomes.

Services can be provided to individuals in outpatient and intensive outpatient services. Facilities providing those services must be client accessible on a 24/7 basis with a licensed addiction counselor or a licensed clinical addiction counselor trained in crisis management /intervention skills. A timely response is essential in providing crisis intervention services. Services would follow the established principles of crisis management:

1. Providing reassurance and support
2. Evaluating the nature of the problem and determining the patient's mental, psychiatric, suicidal or homicidal, and medical statuses
3. Ensuring the safety of the patient and others
4. Assisting the patient in developing an action plan that minimizes distress and obtaining patient commitment to the plan
5. Following up with the patient and other relevant persons to ensure follow-through, assess progress, and provide additional assistance and support

Medication or referral for psychiatric or psychological counseling may be necessary for patients with continuing problems.

Organized service that may be delivered in various settings. This modality is designed to explore and address problems or risk factors that appear to be related to substance use and to help the individual recognize the harmful consequences of substance use.

Delivered in an acute care inpatient setting. This modality of care is appropriate for those individuals whose acute biomedical, emotional, behavioral, and cognitive problems are so severe they require primary medical and nursing care. This program encompasses a planned regimen of 24-hour medically directed evaluation and treatment services. Although treatment is specific to substance abuse problems, the skills of the interdisciplinary team and the availability of support services allow the conjoint treatment of any co-occurring biomedical conditions and mental disorders that need to be addressed.

Provided any time during the day or week and provides essential education and counseling services while allowing the individual to apply their newly acquired skills outside treatment. The program has the capacity to arrange for referral to any auxiliary service and has active affiliations with other modalities of care. Programs may provide overnight housing for individuals with problems related to transportation or family environment but who do not need the supervision or 24-hour access afforded by a residential program.

Provides structured services in a 24-hour residential setting. They are housed in or affiliated with permanent facilities where individuals can reside safely. For the typical resident in an intermediate treatment program, the effects of substance abuse on the individual’s life are so significant, and the resulting level of impairment is so great that a less intensive modality of treatment is not feasible or effective.

Includes the pharmacologic and therapeutic use of opioid or non-opioid compounds to address opioid drug tolerance or addiction provided through long-term detoxification treatment, which means opioid or non-opioid agonist treatment for more than 30 days but not over 180 days, or maintenance treatment, which means the dispensing of an opioid agonist treatment medication at dosage levels for a period over 21 days.

Delivered in a wide variety of nonresidential settings designed to help individuals achieve changes in their substance abuse behaviors. Treatment shall address an individual’s major lifestyle and attitudinal and behavioral problems that can undermine the treatment goals.

Provided by people who are in long-term recovery and have been trained in providing recovery support. The purpose of providing this service is to help build recovery capacity for persons new to recovery by connecting them to naturally occurring resources in the community, assisting in reducing barriers to fully engaging in recovery, and providing support in skill development for maintaining a recovery lifestyle.

Service based on a strength perspective. When a person struggles with substance use disorders or co-occurring disorders, the focus is placed on the person, not the problem/illnesses. The stated social outcomes, desires, and aspirations of the person drive the helping activities of the case manager. Key concepts of PCCM include collaboration, power sharing, mutability, social/behavioral outcomes (may precede authentic cognitive changes), harm reduction, and recovery.

Focuses on applying recovery skills, preventing relapse, improving emotional functioning, promoting personal responsibility, and reintegrating the individual into the community. Individuals treated in a reintegration residential treatment setting typically experience problems with applying recovery skills, assuming personal responsibility, and/or problems with family, education, or work.

Evidence-based approach for identifying patients who use alcohol and other substances at increased levels of risk to reduce and prevent related health consequences, diseases, accidents, and injuries. SBIRT is designed to identify an individual who has an alcohol and/or substance use disorder or is at risk for developing one by evaluating responses to questions about alcohol and/or other substance use.

Typically short-term (less than 7 days) and provides 24-hour supervision, observation, and support for individuals who are intoxicated or experiencing withdrawal from other drugs. This modality of care provides services for those individuals whose intoxication/withdrawal signs and symptoms are sufficiently severe enough to require 24-hour structure and support.

Typically longer term (3 months to 2 years) and is designed to treat individuals with significant social and psychological problems. These programs are characterized by their reliance on the treatment community as a therapeutic agent. The treatment aims to effect a global change in the participant’s lifestyles, attitudes, and values. The typical individual residing in a therapeutic community may be experiencing multiple problems, including substance abuse, criminal activity, psychological problems, impaired functioning, and disaffiliation with mainstream values.
