Sequential Intercept Model
The Sequential Intercept Model is a way to understand and improve how people with mental health needs or disabilities move through the criminal justice system. It breaks the system into stages—or “intercepts”—such as law enforcement, courts, jail, and reentry, and examines how we can support individuals at each stage to prevent them from entering jail and connect them with the appropriate services instead. The goal is to find better ways to assist people in crisis, reduce arrests, and ensure they receive support within the community rather than through the justice system.
KDADS Sequential Intercept Model (SIM) Leadership Committee
Secretary Howard is pleased to announce the formation of the KDADS Sequential Intercept Model (SIM) Leadership Committee to help move six key areas forward to better serve individuals living with I/DD and co-occurring mental health diagnoses. Following the SIM Conference on November 9-10, 2022, stakeholders with years of experience were invited by Secretary Howard to join the SIM Leadership Committee and bring expertise from key intersections of the community, including law enforcement, judges, managed care organizations, self-advocates, mental health providers, and other stakeholders. This committee will lead, define priority areas, and develop metrics to measure success.
