Our History

Osawatomie State Hospital: A History

Our Approach to Care

Founded in 1866, Osawatomie State Hospital (OSH) is licensed by the State of Kansas to provide care and treatment for adults diagnosed with psychiatric disorders regardless of ability to pay. OSH serves individuals from 36 counties in Kansas in collaboration with 12 Community Mental Health Centers (CMHCs). The centers refer individuals for admission to the hospital through a collaborative screening process. There are currently two hospitals on the Osawatomie campus in Miami county: Osawatomie State Hospital and Adair Acute Care.

Our approach to care is based on the understanding that quality mental health services are directed by focused, individualized Treatment Plans based on a comprehensive assessment of the individual's needs and assets. The patient, Treatment Team, Community Mental Health Center (CMHC) and significant others, as requested by the patient, will be involved in treatment planning for each patient.

Within five days of admission a Treatment Plan Meeting is held where the Treatment Plan is developed in collaboration with the patient, based on a review of the assessments, progress notes, and other clinical data. Any member of the treatment team, Community Mental Health Center (CMHC), or any significant other requested by the patient may attend the meeting.

The Treatment Plan will include Goals that address the reasons for admission and other patient needs. The Psychologist or Clinical Therapist is responsible for psychiatric or substance abuse goals. The Registered Nurse is responsible for writing the medical goals to address any acute or chronic medical concerns. The Social Worker is responsible for goals and interventions to address patient needs. Reviews of treatment goals occur as clinically necessary, but at least weekly for the first 60 days of hospitalization, and every 30 days thereafter.

Therapeutic Interventions included in the treatment might include, but are not limited to:

  • Medical Services
  • Evidence-Based Therapeutic Approaches (e.g., DBT techniques, motivational interviewing)
  • Leisure and Fitness Activities
  • Nutrition Services

Discharge Plans are assessed and re-assessed throughout the patient's hospitalization. The Discharge instructions cover discharge arrangements, financial resources, appointments, crisis numbers, outside medical appointments/recommendations, discharge medications, and diagnosis-specific instructions. If the patient has a medical issue, the medical physician will be consulted and appropriate follow up included in the discharge instructions.
